FUNDRAISER: Centennial Elementary hosts annual event to raise money for people with disabilities

With a sparkling tiara in her hair and shiny dress shoes on her feet, 8-year-old Tori Blyle climbed the “Shrek” route on Centennial Elementary School’s rock wall.

Meantime, her best friend Madison Hodges, 7, followed the markers for “Donkey.”

The second-graders wore a tether for a tandem challenge worth double points during the school’s annual Climbing for Kids fundraiser.

“I like to climb a lot,” Madison said.

“It feels good because you’re helping people,” Tori added.

Nearly all 500 students at the school in the southeast corner of the Olympia School District participated in the fundraiser during their PE classes last week. Proceeds of the event will go to the Seattle-based Outdoors For All Foundation, which provides outdoor recreation for people with physical, developmental and sensory disabilities.

“It’s really fun,” second-grader Jasmine Zhang, 8, said about the climb. “It makes you happy because you can help Outdoors For All.”

Most students brought in pledges that were worth a penny a point along the various bouldering routes.

“To me it’s an opportunity for the kids to do a very healthy activity but at the same time help others,” Centennial Principal Alice Drummer said. “We look forward to this every year.”

The climb took place in the gymnasium where a permanent bouldering wall was installed about a decade ago, said PE teacher Jana Gedde. It was judged by firefighters from Lacey Fire District 3, who also served as spotters along the course.

The fundraiser usually brings in between $3,000 and $4,000, Gedde said.

Proceeds from past climbs have supported Pennies for Peace, Backpacks for Kids and the Red Cross to help Japanese tsunami victims, among other charities.

After finishing a beginner course, Sophia Prescott, 8, said she was looking forward to trying a route that was worth 100 points.

“We’re raising money for kids who need help,” she said. “I love to help a lot.”
